At a time when everything felt digital, filtered and increasingly artificial, I needed to make something that couldn't be faked. The palm tree at the centre is hand sculpted from wire and clay, built up with moulding paste and then hand stitched. The words "be real, be you" are stitched directly into the canvas. Nothing about this painting was easy or instant and that was entirely the point.
Before any colour touched the canvas, I buried wishes. Paper cut-outs and collage pressed into the first layers, dreams, goals and desires sealed permanently beneath everything you see. Whoever brings this painting home doesn't just take a painting. They take every good thing I secretly placed there, my best wishes, my most positive thoughts, all of it travelling with the work to wherever it lands next.
This piece was painted and repainted until it felt true. In the end that's all this painting is, a reminder that the most interesting things are always the ones made with intention, and without apology.
